Unit Name: Mental Health Nursing

Description: This course is designed to provide students with information to develop their understanding on the management of mental health care in the Fiji context. Particular focus will be on the evolution of mental health care, practice and treatment, Psychosocial Assessment and major mental health disorders affecting people across the life span such as Neurotic disorders, Psychosis, Mood disorders, Personality, Substance Related disorder and Cognitive disorders. Ethics - legal issues, Psychiatric crisis/ emergency intervention and continuum of mental health care in the primary setting will also be addressed. Advanced communication skills, psychopharmacology and therapeutic mental health intervention for the individuals, families and communities in the Fiji context will be strengthened. Using an ADOPIE approach the results of Mental Health examination is utilised to formulate nursing diagnosis and management of mental health disorders. In addition the students will further be assessed on their competencies for Mental Health Examination and History taking in NUR 723.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Utilize the theoretical perspective of mental illness and the provision of holistic care for clients with mental health diagnosis / problems. 2. Use Mental Status Assessment (MSA) to formulate nursing diagnosis for a client with mental health problem/disorders. 3. Relate the function of psychopharmacology and biopsychosocial therapies in the restoration of client\'s mental health status and prevention of further disability. 4. Utilise Mental health assessment result to formulate nursing care plans , management and treatment for Neurotic and Personality disorders. 5. Interpret the Mental Health assessment outcome of a client with Psychosis and plan nursing management and treatment. 6. Carry out the Mental Health assessment for client with Mood disorder and plan nursing management and treatment. 7. Use ADOPIE for the management and treatment of the two disorders Cognitive disorder and Substance related disorder. 8. Utilise the three level of care to promote mental health and prevent mental illness in managing psychiatric issues in the community. 9. Demonstrate the ability to carry out the psychosocial assessment of client with mental /psychiatric problem and formulate nursing diagnosis.
