Unit Name: Public Health Nursing and Epidemiology

Description: This course is designed to help student in acquiring nursing knowledge and skills that will enable them to promote health and prevent illness at the primary health care level. Students will learn the importance of statistical data in health planning, the dissemination of health services. and disease trend. Furthermore, they will learn about the emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases in the region, chain of transmission, legal issues pertaining to these diseases and the nursing roles in the controlling of these diseases. The utilization of health promotion strategies will be discussed and explored in the control of both the communicable and non-communicable disease in the region. Also integrated in the course are two components of Primary Health Care which are Expanded Immunization (EPI)and School Health of which the students will learn how to assess a school aged child, how to give immunization and store vaccines.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss the concepts of Health Promotion. 2. Explain the different theories /models of Health Promotion. 3. Link epidemiology to the prevention of illness, promotion of health and distribution of health services . 4. Discuss how communicable disease can be controlled and prevented. 5. Demonstrate the ability to use the Expanded Program Immunization (EPI). 6. Discuss the importance of health promoting school. 7. Differentiated the different types of sexual transmitted infection (STI)and their management. 8. Demonstrate the ability to immunize a child / baby and implement health promotion strategies in school setting.
