Unit Name: Child Health Nursing

Description: This course is designed to provide students with understanding of the approach to child health care identification, prevention and nursing management of common problems in children. Growth and development and nutritional needs of the child with the respond of the nurse in the Fijian context will be covered. The role of family in childhood health and illnesses in Fiji and the Pacific will also be examined.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss the key concepts and principles of child health nursing. 2. Describe the Fijian national policies, programs and legislation in relations to child health and welfare. 3. Identify the major causes of death, health risks during infancy, early and late childhood and discuss strategies and preventative nursing measures for Fijian children. 4. Discuss the role of play and major functions and roles of the child health nurse in caring for a hospitalized child. 5. Identify the needs of children at different ages and ways of meeting these needs. 6. Describe the normal growth and development of children at different ages. 7. Identify measures to prevent common childhood diseases including immunization and provide safe and competent nursing care. 8. Discuss the management of child with behavioural, mental and social problem. 9. Demonstrate the ability to carry out nursing care for children in clinical settings.
