Unit Name: Obstetric Nursing

Description: This course is designed to provide students with a foundational knowledge of reproductive health, pregnancy, labor, birth puerperium and the normal new born. It will also provide students with knowledge and skills of how to identify and refer high risk cases. Students will also be introduced to obstetric Nursing procedures and taught necessary skills for monitoring and care of pregnant and laboring women, normal new born and postpartum care. This course will also include clinical attachment to Maternity units.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Review human reproduction and discuss the history and global trends in Maternity Health Nursing. 2. Explain basic knowledge of conception and the physiology of fetal development. 3. Describe the physiological changes of pregnancy and its minor disorders. 4. Formulate nursing care plans for normal physiological changes of pregnancy and minor disorders. 5. Identify High risk conditions in pregnancy and their care. 6. Discuss the physiology and stages of labor and birth. 7. Explain the nursing care of managing a woman during labor and birth. 8. Discuss the physiology and care of a woman during the postpartum period. 9. Describe the basic needs, characteristics and care of the normal new born and new born with special needs. 10. Demonstrate the ability to perform nursing procedures required in caring for women antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and the normal new born and new born with special needs.
