Unit Name: Human Bio-Sciences: Altered Body Functions I

Description: This course examines the aetiology of disease and alteration of health status and the relevant scientific clinical tests, including the role of micro-organisms in the disease processes. The course introduces the student to health problems of the adolescent, adult and the elderly which can be medically and /or surgically managed. It focuses on concepts, principles and techniques of medical/surgical nursing. Students are expected to know the impact of diseases on the psychosocial, economical and spiritual wellbeing of the client as an individual, on families, communities and Fiji as a nation. The course also encourages students to reflect on own cultural perspectives of diseases and altered health states and how ill-health is managed, reversed and prevention of relapse is maintained.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with integumentary disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 2. Apply the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with visual and auditory disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 3. Demonstrate the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with musculo disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 4. Apply the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with skeletal disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 5. Demonstrate the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with neurological disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 6. Demonstrate the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with endocrine disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 7. Apply the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with lymphatic and immune disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 8. Utilize the skills of assessing the sick adult individual with haematological disorders, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures. 9. Demonstrate the skills of assessing the sick adult individual, recognize the signs and symptoms, and evaluate the diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive, corrective surgical measures.
