Unit Name: Spiritual and Culture in Nursing Practice

Description: This course is underpinned by the philosophical basis of spirituality and of the relationship of the cultural and spiritual perspectives of health and ill-health in the Fijian society. Spiritual and cultural understandings of health form the basis for an exploration of cultural, biological, social, economic, environmental and political interactions and their impacts on the health of the Fijian people. The course also explores the spiritual aspects of nursing, the nurse and the client and prepares the nurse with the relevant skills to reflect on own spirituality in order to meet the spirituality needs of the client. The spiritual worldviews of the Indigenous I-Taukei, the Indo- Fijian population and two other major ethnic groups in Fiji are examined in their implications for nurses as care givers and in evaluating health care policies and services in Fiji and the Pacific.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Discuss Nursing, Spirituality and Holistic Care. 2. Explore and discuss the philosophic foundation of man as a spirit being and the central concept of man. 3. Describe the foundation of culture and spirituality of the Fijian people and its relationship to the health perspectives of the various different ethnic groups in Fiji. 4. Discuss three major religious denominations in Fiji and their doctrines of caring and service. 5. Identify and discuss selected Nursing Theories and ethical basis of nursing practice. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of wholeness, wellness and spiritual health. 7. Demonstrate the ability to diagnose, treat and care for clients. 8. Examine the spiritual nature of nursing and its role in providing spiritual care for clients. 9. Critique research report on spirituality. 10. Demonstrate the ability to provide holistic care in nursing practice.

Prerequisite: Pass in Year 13 examination (or equivalent) and as per Minimum Entry Requirement (MER).
