Unit Name: Foundations of Nursing Practice

Description: This course is designed to provide students with beginning foundational nursing practice knowledge and skills. Students will be able to define nursing and discuss the concepts of nursing at the beginning level. It will assist students to understand the early civilization of nursing, the origins and contemporary nursing definitions. The student will also be able to integrate nursing knowledge into practice by carrying out basic nursing skills and procedures in the clinical laboratory.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Explain the origins of nursing to early civilization and nursing practice. 2. Discuss ethics and etiquettes of nursing of the professional nurse. 3. Utilize the components of the nursing process in relation to patient care. 4. Demonstrate competency in measuring vital signs recording and reporting. 5. Utilize Maslow’s Hierarchy model to provide nursing care. 6. Discuss the importance of fluid electrolytes and acid base balance in the body systems. 7. Develop foundational knowledge and skills to assess and manage a client with special needs. 8. Demonstrate skills in managing a client in cardio pulmonary arrest. 9. Provide care to the deceased client and family. 10. Apply basic nursing skills in low dependency areas of clinical practice.

Prerequisite: Pass in Year 13 examination (or equivalent) and as per Minimum Entry Requirement (MER).
