Unit Name: Life Sciences in Nursing

Description: This course encourages the student to develop knowledge of the interrelationship between the various organ systems and the effects on them of disease. The development of disease is an intricate and involved relationship between normal physiology and altered functioning. Concepts from microbiology, physiology, and pharmacology are explored to enable the student to understand pathophysiological processes.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Utilize basic principles of pharmacology to provide safe nursing care. 2. Discuss the different drug forms and routes for drug administration and calculate oral, injectable and intravenous fluid dosages for adults and children. 3. Apply the principles of drug therapy across the lifespan and the use of and effectiveness of herbal and traditional medicines. 4. Discuss microbiological concepts that impact on disease progression and spread. 5. Discuss the concepts of perioperative nursing. 6. Explore general pathophysiology concepts of disease such as inflammatory reactions, wound healing, and the effects of stress, neoplasm, shock and pain. 7. Discuss concepts of infection control and nosocomial infection. 8. Demonstrate skills in basic nursing procedures.
