Unit Name: Nursing Practice in Public Health and Mental Health Settings
Description: In this course, students will utilize the nursing process in caring for clients with varying degrees of mental health problems. Students will apply techniques of therapeutic communication. In addition, students will utilize and maintain legal and ethical standards specific to mental health clients. In addition, students are provided with opportunities to examine the key role of nurses in identifying risk factors, early intervention, and mental health promotion. The concepts of PHC, organization to facilitate PHC, multi-sectoral approach, and the position of the volunteer community health worker are addressed. Levels of PHC (primary, secondary, and tertiary) are defined and their place in the community discussed.
Learning Target Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Identify and describe the differences and the similarities of different ethnic worldviews of the various cultural groups living in Fiji; 2. Discuss the principles and concepts of Primary Health Care in the prevention of illness and the maintenance of wellness in the community. 3. Explain at population health principles. 4. Describe how population health promotion differs from other types of nursing practice. 5. Outline the public health concepts &/or frameworks and describe how they are relevant to public health nursing. 6. Discuss the contextual components of primary health care. 7. Identify the inter-relationships between the biopsychosocial factors in the development of mental health problems. 8. Discuss mental health care plan for mental issues or disorders. 9. Care for the client in the community who is living with specified mental health disorders
