Unit Name: Nursing Practice II
Description: This course introduces the student to more advanced nursing assessment and care. general pre- and post-operative nursing will be addressed. care of the disabled or immobile patient including fluid therapy, pressure area care, activity and exercise are studied. the assessment and management of the hospitalized child is addressed. medication administration will be explored. In this course, students will apply theoretical concepts and practice skills to maintain and promote the five domains of care. Students will use the appropriate equipment and gain skill competency by practicing basic nursing skills in the skills lab.
Learning Target Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Describe nursing from a historical perspective. 2. Describe the pre-operative teaching for general surgery along with its rationale. 3. Utilize the pre-operative checklist effectively. 4. Demonstrate the ability to conduct pre- and post-operative assessment and document findings appropriately. 5. Discuss the principles of caring and relate them to nursing the person with a disability. 6. Demonstrate proficiency in basic nursing skills as specified: maintenance of fluid therapy, surgical asepsis, wound assessment, and simple wound care. 7. Manage the care of the patient in acute pain. 8. Describe the phases and associated signs/symptoms involved in the dying process. 9. Demonstrate skills in basic nursing procedures.
