Unit Name: EN Practice in Community Health

Description: In this course, health and the environment are linked, and the link is explored to determine some of the causal webs of disease and disability. Community as a concept is explored. Within the concept of community, negotiating entry into the community, assessment (data collection), problem identification, prioritizing and planning programmes. Family health, including tasks of family in health care; strengths and weaknesses of a family (problem identification); methods of bringing about change in the family.

Learning Target Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Apply theories of nursing, community health nursing, social and behavioural sciences to the management and delivery of population-focused nursing care. 2. Describe the impact of environment and lifestyle on the health of populations 3. Explain the theories and models for Community Health 4. Utilize the WHO declarations and charter to assess, plan, implement and evaluate community-based programs. 5. Apply the WHO declarations and charter to assess, plan, implement and evaluate community-based programs. 6. Build relationships with community members and leaders of community groups to achieve mutually set health goals. 7. Describe the different levels of health care in the community 8. Discuss the following factors that affect/influence human sexuality in Fiji and the Pacific: values, attitudes, culture, religion, media, peers, education, society/environment 9. Demonstrate skills in assessing nursing competencies
