Unit Name: Therapeutic Communication and Spirituality in Nursing
Description: This course introduces students to strategies necessary to encourage therapeutic/ helping relationships between nurses and patients. It will provide a comprehensive and practical understanding of Therapeutic Communication. It teaches a person-centered approach to communicating effectively with others. Students will also learn Spirituality in Nursing care with a greater emphasis on promoting and assessing one’s own spirituality. A deeper understanding of the influence that spirituality, beliefs, and values have on human health will be taught, utilizing theories from nursing.
Learning Target Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Identify the purpose of therapeutic communication between nurse and client. 2. Use written, verbal, non-verbal, and emerging technology methods to communicate effectively. 3. Identify the appropriate use of social media in the practice of professional nursing. 4. Apply concepts of group dynamics and communication principles to work groups 5. Discuss the importance of engaging one’s personal sense of spirituality as a source of self-care and support. 6. Define spirituality and the unique ways in which it may be expressed by persons. 7. Discuss historical nursing and social work approaches to spirituality as a part of professional practice 8. Identify the issues of spiritual distress that may be experienced by persons of different cultural and spiritual, religious, or existential backgrounds 9. Demonstrate skills in assessing nursing competencies
