Unit Name: Basic Nursing Sciences

Description: The course will provide students with an understanding of the basic human anatomy and physiology. The students will learn the concepts of health and ill-health as in health-illness continuum, cultural perspectives of health and ill-health, and the basic principles of nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance, homeostasis, health promotion, prevention and basic mental health concepts in nursing. The concepts of infection prevention and control; medical and surgical sepsis, are also discussed.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Define basic terms and abbreviations used in documenting health records. 2. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Cardiovascular System 3. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Nervous System 4. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Special Senses 5. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Endocrine System 6. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Respiratory System 7. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Digestive System 8. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Urinary System 9. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Reproductive System 10. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Intergumentary System 11. Describe the anatomy & physiology of the Musculoskekeletal System 12. Describe the kinds of relationship that exist between living organisms. 13. Identify the most common microbes and describe some of their characteristics. 14. Demonstrate skills related to infection and control
