Unit Name: Nursing Practice I

Description: This initial nursing practice subject introduces the student to the complexity of nursing care with its intertwining concepts of health and illness, person, environment, nursing, and care. The health status of the individual is foundational to caring for their needs. The student is encouraged to develop assessment skills and the basic caring skills to enable them to care for clients safely and effectively in a low dependency area.

Learning Target Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Discuss fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance 2. Determine specific Health and care needs of patients 3. Apply patient care and general comfort measures 4. Demonstrate skills and techniques in patient hygiene procedures, environmental health, and comfort in the hospital setting. 5. Demonstrate maintenance of a safe environment and how to avoid personal injuries. 6. Demonstrate skills in accurately measuring and recording vital signs and blood glucose monitoring 7. Discuss principles of nutrition and emphasizes the functions of the major nutrients required for health. 8. Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of health, environment and caring as they relate to nursing practice. 9. Demonstrate competency in Basic Life Support
