Unit Name: Communication & Professional Nursing
Description: This subject introduces the student to professional knowledge that will be needed during the career of a nurse. It addresses ways of thinking, reflective practice, and critical thinking. Students are led to identify assumptions and discuss specific ways of knowing (personal, empirical, cultural). Unique Fijian approaches to knowledge generation are addressed. Professional attributes of honesty, integrity and egalitarianism are sought to enhance the ability of the nurse to perform effectively.
Learning Target Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Identify features that differentiate the nursing profession from other professions. 2. Discuss the various methods of communication utilized in Nursing practice. 3. Demonstrate effective communication skills in oral and written communication. 4. Describe Orem’s Self Care theory and its application to the nursing process 5. Discuss communication across lifespan and across cultures 6. Discuss the scope of practice, competency standards and professional ethics. 7. Demonstrates professional, ethical, and legal behavior in personal practice.
