Unit Name: Community Mental Health Nursing

Description: The purpose of the course is to provide: Determinants of mental health in the community such as the social, political and cultural factors will be explored and discussed. Application of primary health care, health promotion strategy in mental health care services and management of the client during crises or experiencing violence will be analysed. Also they will be taught family health assessment and the expected role and function of the family in the recovery process of the client. Furthermore the importance of prenatal care , management of the child ,adolescents and elderly psychosocial issues will be discussed.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1: Appraise the impact of climate change and social determinants of mental health in a cultural diverse community 2: Develop project proposal utilizing primary health care principal and health promotion strategies in the maintenance of mental wellness. prevention of mental illness and rehabilitation of client’s retuning to the community 3: Discuss the different types of case mangement model in the continuum of mental health care in the community 4: Formulate nursing care plan to address the needs of familes and carers of the the client experiencing mental distress 5: Determine the impact of sexual abuse, violence and domestic violence on the victim to develop a mangement plan for his/her recovery . 6: Justify the importance of Perinatal Mental Health 7: Devise the appropriate nursing strategies when caring for child/adolescents with mental health issues . 8: Evaluate the impact of gender issues in the society 9: Develop the appropriate nursing strategies when caring for an elderly client with mental health issues. 10: Demonstrate the ability to plan and apply nursing skills in the management of clients with psychosocial issues (clinical practice).
