Unit Name: Nursing Management of Substance Use Disorders

Description: This course extends and develops the student’s existing understanding of substance use disorders. Students will be learning to address the process of screening, assessing and making nursing diagnosis as pertaining to clients’ need. Furthermore they will explore the impact of substance use on the physical and psychological status of the user together with treatment and prevention of substance use.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: 1. Discuss the epidemiology of Substance Use Disorders. 2. Relate the pharmacodynamics of the substance on the brain. 3. Justify the occurrence of common -co-occurring mental -medical disorders in client who uses substances. 4. Synthesis data gathered during the screening and assessment for the nursing management of a client who uses substances. 5. Discuss the Recovery process for a client who uses substances. 6. Apply appropriate case management to follow up client in the community. 7. Demonstrate the ability to uses health promotion strategies to prevent and decrease the use of substances. 8. Demonstrate the ability to assess & plan nursing management of client with SUD.
