Unit Name: Research Designs in Nursing

Description: This course is designed to provide students with research knowledge and skills that have practical application for future innovations in nursing\'s health care industry. Concepts and components of the research process are discussed and critically analyzed. Emphasis on various types’ research methods as well as data analysis methods and practicum, with particular emphasis on the rights and responsibilities toward human subjects.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Analyse ways of acquiring nursing knowledge and operationalize the utilization of nursing research in evidence based practice. 2. Demonstrate the knowledge of the research process and ethical principles. 3. Demonstrate the ability to write a research problem. 4. Critique research questions, objectives, variables and hypotheses in published nursing research report. 5. Demonstrate skills in writing a literature review by critiquing literature review and conceptual framework section of a published study. 6. Critique quantitative and qualitative research designs using nursing research critique guidelines. 7. Propose sample sizes for research designs by critiquing sampling plans found in research reports for their contribution to the strength of evidence for nursing practice. 8. Critique data collection processes and tools for a proposed study and analyse the data collection, data analysis section in published nursing studies. 9. Write a research proposal and defend.
