Unit Name: Bandsmanship 1

Description: This course contains three components: Ensemble Performance Practice, Conducting, and Arranging. Ensemble Performance Practice trains students in the craft of ensemble collaboration, performance technique, and listening skills to develop confident musicians that perform with understanding and expression. Conducting introduces students to the basic craft of conducting and ensemble leadership. This component develops basic conducting technique and hand symbols with focus on ensemble development. Arranging introduces basic skills in writing music for brass instruments and full military brass band. This component introduces the various characteristics of each instrument of the band and the application of orchestration techniques.

Prerequisite: N/A

Prerequisite Sentence: The minimum entry requirement for fresh school leavers to Certificate IV is successful completion of studies up to Fiji?s Sixth Form (12 years of continuous progression), with 50% in English or equivalent. Applicants may also be admitted to Certificate IV in programmemes who may not meet the 12 years of continuous progression requirement, but who are able to demonstrate their ability to succeed in programmemes at these levels on the basis of maturity, work experience, or prior learning.
