Unit Code: MTH808

Unit Name: Theory of Manifolds

Description: This is designed to introduce the core topics of differential geometry. Differential geometry may be considered as the extension of calculus to certain generalised surfaces (?manifolds?), which locally look like Rn. In this course we develop the basic theory and terminology required to the study smooth manifolds. We end the course with a treatment of vector fields (which may loosely be considered as systems of ODEs on manifolds), and take a brief look at one of the central modern applications of the differential geometry: the study of lie groups and lie algebras.
