Unit Name: Research Methods in Mathematics

Description: This course is a compulsory course for a postgraduate diploma in Mathematics. The course will provide concepts and principles for mathematical researches and also inlcudes: the development and application of the mathematical research methods; FNU research and ethics requirements; research application procedures; project planning; preparation and use of computer lab; using web of knowledge; crtitical review of research paper; how to write mathematical research papers, paper present/ talks; and subject-specifific research methods.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of research techniques of how to plan, execute and conduct mathematical research;(5 CPs) 2. Critically analyse the essential components of a research paper related to mathematics; (5 CPs) 3. Apply knowledge and skills to submit a research proposal relevant to his/her chosen mathematical research topic; (5 CPs) 4. Demonstrate the capability of presenting and publishing his/her research work; (5 CPs)
