Unit Code: MTH514

Unit Name: Probability & Statistics

Description: This unit is designed as one of the core unit for students intending to major in statistics. This unit introduces students to basic applied statistics using simple ideas in probability, descriptive and inferential and descriptive statistics. With the introduction of statistical concepts this unit would provide students with a firm basis to develop skill in analysing statistical data. Topics include: Fundamental concepts and methods of statistics with emphasis on interpretation of statistical arguments. An introduction to data analysis, correlation and regression, concepts of probability theory, sampling distributions and errors, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests.

Learning Target Outcomes: At the end of this course, the student should be able to : 1. Discuss the nomenclature, uses and misuses of inferential and descriptive statistics. 2. Analyse and discuss different distribution graphs. 3. Calculate the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance, percentiles, and z-score and use them to analyze the data. 4. Calculate probabilities using the addition rule, multiplication rule and conditional probability. 5. Calculate the mean, standard deviation, variance and expected value for discrete probability distributions including the Binomial Distribution. 6. Calculate areas under the Standard Normal Distribution and use the results to solve application problems. 7. Discuss the Central Limit Theorem in solving problems involving sample means. 8. Design confidence intervals for the population mean using large and small samples, population proportion, and population standard deviation. 9. Design and conduct hypothesis testing. 10. Calculate the correlation coefficient and equation of the least-squares regression line and use the results to predict. 11. Experiment using Chi-Square tests for goodness of fit, the test of independence, and homogeneity tests.
