Unit Code: MTH404

Unit Name: Foundation Mathematics I

Description: This is the 1st of two mathematics courses. The course is a continuation from preliminary mathematics courses where the topics algebra, functions, graphs, trignometry, complex numbers and sequences are studied in detail. This provides the student with a foundation to pursue any further programmeme he/she requires to do.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Illustrate the basic knowledge, principles and techniques in Algebra, to prove mathematical statements using the Mathematical Induction process. 2. Sketch and interpret rational functions, polynomials, piece-wise functions, exponential and logarithmic functions. 3. Apply trigonometric relations and addition law formulae to prove identities, and solve application problems of Trigonometry 4. Illustrate the concepts of complex numbers and carry out basic operations of complex numbers. 5. Determine the nth term of arithmetic and geometric sequences and find the sum to infinity and solve application problems.
