Unit Code: MLS704
Unit Name: Advanced Haematology
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of two critical areas within haematology: haemostasis and leukaemias. Haemostasis, the intricate process of blood clot formation and regulation, and leukaemias, a group of blood cancers affecting white blood cells, are fundamental topics in haematology with significant clinical implications. Through lectures, discussions, case studies, and laboratory sessions, students will delve into the pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, management strategies, and recent advancements in these areas. Practical sessions for each topic is described in detail in the practical manual, a camponion to course descriptor. There is a must pass (50%) in the practical examination in the continuous assessment.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Perform venepuncture and use correct blood collection containers 2. Recognise and interpret the mechanisms underlying both bleeding, thrombotic disorders and nonmalignant disorders. 3. Differentiate between acute and chronic leukaemias, understand their molecular basis and assess prognostic factors influencing treatment outcomes. 4. Perform and interpret a range of laboratory tests essential for diagnosing haemostatic disorders and leukaemias, evaluation of morphology, immunophenotyping, cytogenetics and molecualr testing, enabling them to make accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions. 5. Analyse emerging trends and advancements in the fields of haemostasis and leukaemias. 6. Discuss laboratory safety practices to maintain quality control measures and ethics in a haematology laboratory.
