Unit Code: MLS703
Unit Name: Diagnostic Microbiology
Description: This course is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical experience in clinically important pathogens and cover topics in food and water microbiology, clinical bacteriological analyses, automation and quality control procedures utilized in microbiology. Laboratory practical sessions will have a greater emphasis on microbiological laboratory methods used in the processing and analysis of clinical specimens. This course emphases on the cultivation, isolation, detection, antimicrobial testing and reporting of clinically significant pathogens. Practical sessions for each topic is described in the practical manual, a companion to course descriptor. There is a must pass (50%) in the practical examination in the continuous assessment.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Establish guidelines in identifying normal microbial flora. 2. Compare common pathogenic bacteria and principles of various microbiology techniques. 3. Analyse potential pathogens using various microbiology techniques to describe phenotypic characteristics of common pathogenic bacteria isolated from different body sites. 4. Perform microbiological skills to identify antimicrobial resistance and pathogens in food and water. 5. Discuss microbial surveillance using genetic identification. 6. xamine the principles of quality assurance in a microbiology laboratory.
