Unit Name: Cytopathology

Description: This course is designed to provide students with basic knowledge of cytopathology. Cytopathology is a branch of pathology that looks at diseases at the cellular level. The theory and the lab components are designed to enable the student to gain insight at the cellular level of disease by learning how to process and stain specimens obtained through exfoliation and aspiration as well as how to screen and interpret slides of common diseases. The knowledge attained from this course allows the student to apply relevant information to their 4th year of the BMLS program and then during their career as a qualified health professional. Practical sessions for each topic is described in the practical manual, a companion to course descriptor.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe cytotechnology and processes in a basic cytology laboratory. 2. Examine Bethesda system in grading normal, benign and malignant cytological changes in the female genital tract. 3. Evaluate benign and malignant cytological changes seen microscopically from specimen of the respiratory tract. 4. Demonstrate competency in identifying normal, benign and malignant cytological changes seen microscopically from specimen from the urinary tract. 5. Evaluate various body fluids and identify normal, benign conditions, primary and metastatic malignant conditions. 6. Examine specimen from the gastrointestinal tract and identify normal, benign and malignant conditions. 7. Discuss Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) technique and the principle of the Immunocytochemistry staining. 8. Design quality control, quality assurance and auditing process in relation to ethical issues pertaining to a cytology laboratory.
