Unit Name: General and Systemic Pathology

Description: Pathology is the scientific study of the etiology, pathogenesis and consequences of diseases affecting the human body. This course will enable students to apply their pathology knowledge in the later allied health years and then as a qualified health professional. This course provide students with a basic knowledge of various diseases, about their causes, progression , various morphological changes and biochemical alterations leading to various signs and symptoms in human body. Students will be able to corelate between the basic sciences and clinical subjects. The theory, tutorials and demonstrations are designed to enable the students to gain insight on the fundamental mechanisms of how pathological processes occur in the body leading to disease.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Demonstrate understanding of pathology as the foundation of medical science and practice. • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cellular adaptations to disease, cell injury, and cell death. • Compare different types of neoplasia and their etiological factors. • Demonstrate knowledge of haemodynamic disorders, lung and liver diseases. • Apply basic knowledge of congenital and acquired cardiac diseases to myocardial infarction & rheumatic heart disease. • Demonstrate knowledge of common diseases of the reproductive, alimentary, and urinary system. • Demonstrate knowledge of common diseases of the osteoarticluar system, endocrinopathies. And lesions of the central nervous system • Apply knowledge of molecular testing in infectious, oncological and genetic diseases.

Prerequisite: Students must pass all courses in the BMLS year 1 and Semester 1 courses in BMLS year 2
