Unit Name: Haematology I

Description: This course is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge about blood in health and disease. The topics in this course cover production of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and classification and development of anemia. The practical sessions will include hands on study of the morphological features of the cells and identifying presence of disorders.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of blood components and normal blood parameters • Apply knowledge of stem cell theory and haematopoietic growth factors relating it to the site of production in foetal haematopoiesis. • Compare leukopoiesis and megakaryopoiesis by relating the morphological features of each cell with the growth factors. • Demonstrate knowledge the process of haemoglobin synthesis and iron metabolism • Apply knowledge of erythrocyte indices to identify abnormal erythrocyte morphology • Compare the pathophysiology of the different types of anaemias.

Prerequisite: Students must pass all courses in the BMLS year 1 courses and Semester 1 courses in BMLS year 2
