Unit Code: MLS604

Unit Name: HISTOLOGY

Description: Histopathology is a branch of pathology which deals with the study of disease in a tissue section. The four fundamental tissues that is recognized are epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissue. The arrangement of tissues constitute a major organ systems, including the circulatory, lymphatic, integumentary, skeletal, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine, exocrine and reproductive systems. For the diagnosis of pathological conditions, the tissue undergoes a series of histological processes before it reaches the examiners desk to be thoroughly examined microscopically. Histological processes includes tissue fixation, staining, embedding, sectioning and immunohistochemistry. This course will focus in depth the practical aspects of tissue preparation to study the manifestations of disease.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of microscopic structure of human cells and tissues. • Apply competent laboratory skills in specimen reception, patient verification, labeling, cut-up room preparation and safety procedures in the histology laboratory. • Demonstrate knowledge of all laboratory processes and trouble shooting in the histology laboratory • Demonstrate knowledge of routine histological staining and trouble shooting • Compare the different specials stains in histology and their purposes • Design an organised quality control programme from specimen collection to result delivery for a histology laboratory • Evaluate the technique of tissue decalcification and frozen section in histological diagnosis of disease
