Unit Name: Clinical Mycology, Parasitology and Virology
Description: The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge pertaining to general microbiology, basic information on mycology and parasitology in the first semester. In the second semester students will learn about medically important viruses and serological principles and their application in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. In the practical aspect of microbiology students will learn aseptic procedures, isolation and identification of microorganisms, quality control and overlapping areas on immunology, epidemiology and molecular technology. Practical sessions for each topic is described in the practical manual, a companion to course descriptor.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Differentiate between the different types of microorganisms, their characteristics and the purpose of medical microbiology. 2. Compare the different types of medically important fungal species and the various diagnostic procedures for fungal identification 3. Discuss different types of medically important parasites and the various diagnostic procedures for parasitic identification 4. Compare the different types of medically important viruses and the various diagnostic procedures for viral identification 5. Explain principle of serological methods for the diagnosis of infections, and ethical issues regarding serological testing.
