Unit Name: General and Medical Microbiology I

Description: This course will provide basic knowledge pertaining to general microbiology, basic information on Bacteriology, mycology and parasitology in the first semester. In the second semester you will learn about medically important viruses and serological principles and their application in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. In the practical aspect of microbiology you will learn aseptic procedures, isolation and identification of microorganisms, quality control and overlapping areas on immunology, epidemiology and molecular technology.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of the different types of microorganisms, their characteristics, and the purpose of medical microbiology • Compare the different types of bacteria of medical importance • Compare the different types of medically important fungal species. • Compare the different types of medically important parasites • Compare the different types of medically important viruses • Demonstrate knowledge of the principle of serological methods for the diagnosis of infections, and ethical issues regarding serological testing.
