Unit Name: Transfusion Medicine I

Description: The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the clinical area of blood banking; the course covers principles of antigen on red blood cells and antibodies in serum of blood. This course also covers blood typing and other basic immune haematological procedures and compatibility theory.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to: • Demonstrate knowledge of the history of Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking. • Evaluate reagents, anticoagulants and potentiators used in blood banking. • Demonstrate knowledge on quality assurance and ethical issues arising in Transfusion Medicine and ethical issues arising in transfusion medicine • Demonstrate knowledge of donor recruitment, blood donation and ethics in donor selection. • Compare special blood donation procedures • Demonstrate knowledge on blood and blood components.
