Unit Name: Introduction to Laboratory Medicine

Description: The purpose of this course is to provide BMLS Year 1 students a general perspective of what is involved in the field of medical laboratory science and the role of the medical laboratory in healthcare. The course focuses on introducing laboratory safety, hazards, infection control, the core departments of the laboratory, medicolegal and ethical issues in the field of medical laboratory, sample collection, and laboratory quality management system to the students. Practical sessions for each topic is described in the practical manual, a companion to course descriptor.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the significant role of medical laboratory scientists in the context of providing quality health care to patients from diverse backgrounds. 2. Discuss basic clinical laboratory procedures using appropriate laboratory techniques and instrumentation in accordance with laboratory safety protocol. 3. Differentiate between the different departments of pathology laboratory and the types of laboratory tests. 4. Perform calculations for preparation of solutions, dilutions, concentrations and calculation of laboratory parameters. 5. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication that represents competence and professionalism in the clinical laboratory. 6. Explain the importance of quality control and quality assurance in the medical laboratory.
