Unit Name: Introduction to Laboratory Medicine

Description: The purpose of this course is to provide BMLS Year 1 students a general perspective of what is involved in the field of medical laboratory science and the role of the medical laboratory in healthcare. The course focuses on introducing laboratory safety, hazards, infection control, the core departments of the laboratory, medicolegal and ethical issues in the field of medical laboratory, sample collection, and laboratory quality management system to the students.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Distinguish the role the significant role of medical laboratory science in healthcare. • Demonstrate the knowledge of the basic clinical laboratory procedures using appropriate laboratory techniques and instrumentation in accordance to laboratory safety protocol. • Demonstrate understanding of all the departments and their specific roles in the Pathology Laboratory. • Discuss laboratory results in accordance to laboratory protocol. • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication that represents competence and professionalism in the clinical laboratory. • Demonstrate the knowledge and the understanding of importance quality control in the medical laboratory
