Unit Name: Leadership and Management: for Excellence

Description: The purpose of this course is to explore contemporary issues related to leadership and management, and provide students with the essential knowledge and a ‘toolkit’ of skills from which to work with confidence as a leader and manager. Practical solutions are provided to day-to-day problems leaders and manager’s face, in order to develop leadership and management competencies, maximize performance and productivity of themselves and others, and enable students to creating more harmonious and productive teams. Topics will include the nature of leadership and management; effective leadership behavior; leading change and innovation; participative leadership and empowerment; leadership traits and skills; contingency theories and adaptive leadership; power and influence tactics; leadership and management of teams and decision groups; strategic leadership in organizations; cross cultural leadership and diversity; and developing leadership skills.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. analyze the nature of leadership and managerial work, and required leadership traits and skills; and develop effective leadership behavior for leading change and innovation. 2. analyze the contingency theories and adaptive leadership, and power and influence tactics, and devise the use of these theories and tactics for business excellence. 3. plan for strategic leadership in organizations, and leadership and management of teams and decision groups. 4. plan for cross cultural leadership and diversity. 5. develop leadership and management skills that enable attainment of business excellence.

Prerequisite: Bachelor degree in Business Administration, Management and any level 8 course, or equivalent .
