Unit Name: Trainee Internship

Description: MED714 is an annualized course. It is a year long practicum comprising of 5 Units. Each unit is 8 weeks long. There are 4 major clinical units (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics) and 1 mixed unit of Primary Care and Special Topics (Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology and Psychiatry). In the Mixed Unit, students will spend 4 weeks at a Primary Care setting and 1 week in each of the 4 Special Topics settings. It is important to note that at all times the trainee intern practice will be supervised. The TIs are expected to attend Continuing Medical Education, Handovers and other Professional Development sessions as per discipline requirements.

Learning Target Outcomes: Unit 1: TI Internal Medicine Unit 2: TI Surgery Unit 3: TI Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit 4: TI Paediatrics On successful completion of Units 1-4, the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate critical thinking in the application of broad and integrated knowledge toward the diagnosis, management and prevention of common and important Medical/Surgical/Obstetric & Gynaecological/Paediatric disorders in the Pacific. 2. Be proficient and professional in eliciting, interpreting and documenting a relevant medical history and physical examination of a patient and performing relevant clinical and minor surgical procedures. 3. Demonstrate rational & logical performance in interpreting, evaluating & managing patients’ clinical problems. 4. Recognise one’s role as an effective team member and leader in the clinical management of Medical/Surgical/Obstetrics & Gynaecological/Paediatric patients. 5. Demonstrate a responsible, respectful and conscientious positive attitude in professional ethical and personal behaviour. 6. Recognise the importance of education, self-directed learning, and teaching throughout life in medicine. 7. Communicate effectively and proficiently using some advanced and some specialised skills with individuals and communities. 8. Demonstrate proficiency in analyzing and critically appraising medical literature. Unit 5: TI Primary Care and Special Topics (TI Anaesthesia, TI Emergency Medicine, TI Ophthalmology & TI Psychiatry) On successful completion of Unit 5 -TI Primary Care (PC), the students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a broad and integrated understanding of the organizational structure, processes and systems at the Primary Care (PC) setting: -Health service delivery -8 pillars of PC -Supply chain management of drugs & consumables -Health information systems -Medical ethics and the law 2. Demonstrate a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of disease entities in areas of RMNCAHG: -Reproductive -Maternal -Neonatal -Child -Adolescent -HIV -Gender 3. Demonstrate a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of health protection and prevention: -Control of common CDs. -Outbreak management and response -Environment health & water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) 4. Demonstrate a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the wellness approach to the management of NCDs, malnutrition, injuries, disability, and mental health at the PHC level, including motivational interviewing & counselling. Unit 5: TI Special Topics ANAESTHESIA students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate competency in performing effective airway management. 2. Demonstrate competency in performing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), safe defibrillation and effectively lead advanced life support (ALS) simulations. Unit 5: TI Special Topics EMERGENCY MEDICINE, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate effective communication skills in a structured handover of a patient in the Emergency Department. Unit 5: TI Special Topics OPHTHALMOLOGY attachment, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate competency in performing direct fundoscopy and critical thinking in the management (including referring) of diabetic retinopathy. 2. Demonstrate proficiency in the assessment of emergency ophthalmic conditions and demonstrate critical thinking in their management including appropriate referral to the Ophthalmologist.
