Unit Name: Special Topics

Description: The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to a few clinical specialties that are important to all the major clinical disciplines of medicine, and provide an opportunity to experience working in these departments gaining valuable skills and insight into their roles in the broader provision of health services.

Learning Target Outcomes: At the end of MED706, the student should be able to: 1. Describe the principles of safe perioperative management of patients undergoing surgery and the role of the anaesthetist in theatre and intensive care. 2. Demonstrate proficiency and adaptability in the application of clinical knowledge and experience in emergency medicine. 3. Outline common ophthalmic diseases/conditions, their diagnosis and clinical management as a critical thinker. 4. Develop the ability to take patient history, perform physical examination in a compassionate and ethical manner and interpret investigations critically. 5. Develop skills as an effective communicator, team player and leader in resuscitation which includes maintenance of airway patency, evaluation of shock and haemorrhage control, and performance of effective CPR. 6. Develop skills and ethical practice in basic anaesthetic procedures. 7. Demonstrate adaptability and proficiency in the ability to triage patients presenting with trauma. 8. Demonstrate proficiency in performing fundoscopic and slit-lamp Examination. 9. Demonstrate an awareness of ongoing monitoring of safety and quality in health service provision including the public health impact of the delivery of safe perioperative service.
