Unit Name: Modified Problem Based Learning III

Description: The purpose of this course is to provide an alternative entry pathway into the MBBS programme for those who have already attained an undergraduate degree in the Health Sciences. It provides foundation knowledge in the basic clinical sciences, clinical examination and communication skills. This course is taught in a modified intensive problem based learning mode based on a systems approach. This course builds on and consolidates the knowledge and skills base attained in the candidates’ first degree. This will be achieved through applications of knowledge, clinical skills and professional attitude which form the basis for the training of doctors. This course integrates concepts of prevention of diseases, community medicine and the promotion of health and well-being as well as foundation knowledge of the basic health sciences, communication and clinical skills.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of MED 602, the student, in relation to the following problems: Burns, Immunisation, Peptic Ulcer Disease, Diarrhoea, Malnutrition, Liver Disease, Fractures, , Steroid Adverse Effects, Otitis Media, Pneumonia, Lung Cancer, Anaemia, Rheumatic Fever, Thyroid Disease, Meningitis, Cerebellar Tumour, Stroke, Quadriplegia, Down’s Syndrome, BPH, Haematuria, Intermittent Claudication, Myocardial Infarction, Puberty, Contraception, Pregnancy, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Eye, Anaphylaxis/Asthma, Tuberculosis, Rheumatic Heart Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 And 2/Insipidus, Chronic Kidney Disease, Measles/Malaria, Dengue & Platelets, Conjunctivitis, Muscle Pathology, Sexually Transmitted Infections And Cancer Breast/Cervix, is expected to: 1. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of the basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology and pathology; be able to apply these to the ethical practice of medicine, and facilitate sharing of this knowledge with colleagues and patients. 2. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of the natural history and presentations of the mentioned medical conditions, their complications and co-morbidities. 3. Practice appropriate and effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills as an effective communicator in interactions with patients, their families, colleagues. 4. Demonstrate proficiency in systematically, compassionately and sensitively establishing clear and comprehensive case histories; perform physical examinations in a respectful and organised manner, to elicit clinical signs relevant to an accurate diagnosis. 5. Describe and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests and safely and competently perform procedures relevant to patient presentations. 6. Select appropriate evidence-based patient management plans, recognising and responding to a range of scenarios from emergencies to chronic healthcare needs in a compassionate and culturally sensitive manner as a critical thinker. 7. Use critical thinking to synthesise patients’ clinical information to generate a logical provisional diagnosis, appropriate differential diagnoses and individualized management plans. 8. Recognise one\'s own limitations in knowledge and skills through a reflective process, and address and rectify them. 9. Demonstrate a sustained commitment to remain up-to-date in relevant aspects of medical practice through self-directed learning. 10. Use constructive criticism for enhancement of professional performance. 11. Carry out on-going medical education and health advocacy by teaching and learning from peers. 12. Recognise the importance of one\'s own health, be able to identify risks to it, and apply a range of approaches to obtain assistance when needed. 13. Practice ethics, compassion, respect and empathy during interactions with patients and peers. 14. Discuss appropriate ethical decision making for sensitive management issues. 15. Apply the ethical principles of justice, equity, confidentiality and integrity to the patient and the profession and legislation relevant to medical practice. 16. Discuss as a leader in health, the engagement of other sectors in formulating and implementing strategies to address problems and improve health for individuals and populations.
