Unit Name: Problem Based Learning I

Description: The purpose of the first tier of the MBBS programme is to acquire the knowledge and skills in the Basic Sciences that are the building blocks and foundation of the clinical sciences. The MBBS 1 course is the first year of this tier. The MBBS course is based on the problem based learning (PBL) method of teaching and it is in the first three years where students are taught with this methodology. This course also provides an introduction to the clinical skills and clinical sciences which form the second tier, or final three years of the training of doctors. An introduction to the concepts of prevention of diseases, community medicine and the promotion of health and well-being are also integrated into the course.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon successful completion of MED501 the student is expected to carry out the listed learning outcomes in relation to the following topics: Homeostasis, Burns, Muscle Physiology, Fracture, Anaemia, Abscess, Laceration, Immunisation, Autonomic Nervous System, Peripheral Vascular disease, Myocardial Infarction, Otitis Media, Bronchiolitis, Pneumonia and Lung Cancer. 1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology) and public health, relating the concepts to the medical conditions above and sharing of this knowledge with colleagues and patients. 2. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the natural history, clinical features and complications of the medical conditions above. 3. Demonstrate the use of a wide range of routine and some advanced effective communication skills in patient-centred care. 4. Perform history taking and physical examination systematically, compassionately and sensitively. 5. Synthesise the patient\'s clinical information to generate and rank appropriate differential diagnoses with reference to the above medical conditions. 6. Describe and interpret appropriate investigations and discuss procedures relevant to patient presentations. 7. Discuss appropriate patient management plans, relevant to the level of care, for the conditions mentioned above. 8. Recognise the relevance and reliability of medical information when using online information technology. 9. Recognise and improve one\'s own limitations in knowledge and skills through reflective processes. 10. Demonstrate a sustained commitment, initiative and independence to remain current in relevant aspects of medical practice through self-directed and peer learning. 11. Use feedback to improve professional performance and ethical practice. 12. Practise principles of ethics, confidentiality, integrity, and personal accountability to the patient and profession by adhering to the legislation related to the health profession. 13. Demonstrate compassion, respect, empathy and sensitivity to individuals from different social and personal backgrounds.
