Unit Name: Surveying 1

Description: Introduce to students the fundamentals of land surveying procedures and calculations.

Learning Target Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to: 1. Define and give a brief description of the role and function of a surveyor. 2. Give a brief description and explain the principles of surveying, survey methods and classes of surveying. 3. Measure and carry out necessary corrections to field distances. 4. Explain the 3 major types of errors, and their characteristics and explain why errors can be avoided and how surveyors deal with them. 5. Determine whether a levelling and traverse work is within the acceptable level from field data. 6. Reduce and adjust levelling field data. 7. Carry out contour interpolation and draw contours. 8. Carry out a traverse and the associated calculations including Bowditch. 9. Plot survey field data accurately. 10. Calculate bearings from angles and a line of known bearing. 11. Calculate bearings and distances from given coordinates and vice versa. 12. Undertake area and volume calculations.

Prerequisite: Minimum Entry Requirements of the programme

Prerequisite Sentence: Pass in FSLC Examination with pass in Mathematics
