Unit Name: Livestock Production Management

Description: Livestock in Fiji & the Pacific- association of livestock to the people of Fiji & the Pacific in society. Livestock production systems of different agro-climatic zones. Building materials used for construction of wall, roof and floor of animal houses, their characteristics, merits and demerits. Breeds and breed descriptors of important breeds of ruminants. General management and feeding practices of calves, heifers, pregnant, lactating and dry animals, bulls and working animals. Routine dairy farm operations and labour management. Methods of milking and precautions. Concepts of input and output cost of dairy farming (small and large holdings). Demography of sheep, goat and pig population and their role in economy. Breeds and breed descriptors of sheep goats and pig. Important traits for meat, milk and fibre. Housing systems, layout and design of different buildings for small ruminants and monogastric. Judging for the quality and confirmation of body parts of cattle, sheep, goat and pigs. Culling of animals. Animal and animal products, market and marketing., large ruminant production systems, type of beef cattle production systems, dairy and beef cattle breeds, reproductive management of dairy cattle, management of cow during pregnancy and parturition, management of newborn calves and rearing systems, management of weaners, management of lactating cows,economies of dairy and beef cattle farming. in Fiji, management of dairy goat, milking, handling and utilization of sheep and goats milk; sheep and goat skin production: characteristics of goat skin; uses of goat skin; diseases and parasites of sheep & goats.
