Unit Name: Advanced Second Language Acquisition- theory, research & practice

Description: This course revisits the field of L2 Acquisition in order to consolidate students\' understanding of the way first and second languages are learned and acquired. Various theories of L2 Acquisition such as: Behaviourism, Innateness, Universal Grammar, Input/Output, Sociocultural theory and their claims will be examined in the light of recent research findings. The course will also examine the impact of internal and external variables on L2 acquisition and development. Topics would include the role of learning environment for language acquisition, explanations for differences in success among first and second language learners, variations in language use, and the effect of classroom instruction on L2 acquisition. The course also aims to compare methods, contexts, and results of the various studies, categorizing patterns and tendencies in their approaches to research, as well as research results.

Learning Target Outcomes: By the end of the Course students are able to: 1.2.1 Demostrate understanding of various theories of language acquisition (L1 & L2) that have informed learning. 1.2.2 Utilize relevant L1 & L2 conceptual frameworks to analyze classroom - generated and other selected texts 1.2.3 Apply knowledge and skills acquired to conduct a research. 1.2.4 Provide evidence and research - based data to evaluate and substantiate various processes and practices in L1 and L2 learning

Prerequisite: Minimum GPA of 3.0 in BA Lang & Lit/ BEd Sec majoring in English. Mature students would be assessed on an individual basis.
