Unit Name: Discourse Analysis

Description: What we are able to achieve is determined by the range of different forms of language which we have at our disposal, hence it is crucial that we must first master the language demands of our respective subject specific disciplines. This course explores the ways in which language varies according to subject area, social setting, communicative purpose and the social roles and identities of those involved. It examines the workings of various forms of speaking and writing - informal & formal conversation & etc. Students will review literature on various theories that have informed DA, and they will analyze texts in various settings, such as educational, gender-oriented discourse, critical discourse analysis, intercultural communication and etc... Students will develop skills in analyzing the properties of different texts, in characterizing positions and frames and in identifying and classifying the various genres or texts types which operate in particular social settings.

Learning Target Outcomes: By the end of the Course students are able to: 1.2.1 Demostrate an overall understanding of theories and practices in DA by tracing its genesis 1.2.2 Select relevant DA conceptual frameworks to evaluate and critique classroom - generated and other selected texts 1.2.3 Apply knowledge and skills acquired to adopt a position in analysing texts. 1.2.4 Provide evidence through linguistic analysis to substantiate and make a presentation on claims made regarding discourse structure & etc…

Prerequisite: Minimum GPA of 3.0 in BA Lang & Lit/BEd Secondary majoring in English and any equivalents from other universities. Mature students would be assessed on an individual basis.
