Unit Name: Varieties of English

Description: The dynamics of this course is centered on multiple components, first, expansion of English overseas (Africa, North America, South East Asia, West Indies and the Pacific) contributing to new varieties of englishes, and secondly, variety that is associated with individuals, groups, and different professions and occasions. Thus from colonial expansion emerged West Indian English (more precisely Trinidad and Jamaican English), Indian and Pacific English; the second component consists of varieties of English in popular culture, the media, information technology and the professions such medicine and law. Exploring these varieties in the course entails identifying and describing distinctive configuration of linguistic features, and in the end asking questions about the very nature of language.
