Unit Name: Foundation English II

Description: This course offers learners the opportunity to grasp various components of English Literature. Students will work to strengthen their critical reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. LNG 402 also pursues goals identified in the descriptions of English in more complex and sophisticated contexts, offering additional practice in reading chosen literary genres, vocabulary development, grammatical accuracy, and conversational and compositional fluency.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to understand the following: 1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of and appreciation for literature when analyzing poetry, prose and drama. 2. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of figurative language (metaphors, similes, and the like) in poetry, prose and drama. 3. Understand, appreciate, and apply knowledge of plot, character, point of view, imagery, theme, setting, irony, tone, symbols and language when reading prose, poetry or drama. 4. Develop a reasonable interpretation of a literary text and support that interpretation with evidence. 5. Identify common or culturally specific themes in literature by writers of different races, genders and ethnic backgrounds. 6. Develop critical, independent and creative thinking. 7. Understand and interpret situations from others’ perspectives.
