Unit Name: Foundation English I

Description: This course offers learners the opportunity to grasp various components of English. Students will work to strengthen their critical reading and writing skills. LNG 401 also pursues goals identified in the descriptions of English in more complex and sophisticated contexts, offering additional practice in reading comprehension, vocabulary development, grammatical accuracy, and conversational and compositional fluency.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Develop well-organized notes from relevant spoken and written information. 2. Apply business communication strategies and principles to prepare effective communication for domestic and international business situations. 3. Plan and organize good written material - essay, letter, report, memorandum. 4. Develop an understanding of relevant concepts, vocabulary and sentence structures to be used in language. 5. Utilize and apply research tools (e.g. Library and Internet) to find supporting information. 6. Select appropriate organizational formats and channels used in developing and presenting the business message 7. Use the library effectively. 8. Compose and revise accurate academic and business documents using computer technology. 9. Conduct research using a variety of resources and use in-text citations and references.

Prerequisite: A pass in Fiji School Leaving Certificate English or a pass in Preliminary English 1 & 2 or equivalent from other tertiary institution.
