Unit Name: Preliminary English II

Description: The Preliminary English II is a literature-based unit designed for students who do not meet the requirements for Fiji School Leaving Certificate (form 6). This unit will enable students to upgrade their skills in English literature to be equivalent to Fiji\'s sixth-form level. The unit prescription is designed to meet the needs of students who may terminate their formal education at the end of the Certificate Program, take up employment, or proceed for further studies in Fiji or abroad.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. To demonstrate a critical understanding of and appreciation for literature when analysing stories, poems, and plays. 2. To develop a reasonable interpretation of a literary text and to support that interpretation with evidence 3. To understand and appreciate figurative language (metaphors, similes, and the like) in poetry, fiction, and drama. 4. To identify common or culturally specific themes in literature by writers of different races, genders and ethnic backgrounds 5. Read and analyse a variety of literary works. 6. Respond critically to the works they read 7. Analyse character, plot, setting, background, theme and style 8. View literature as depicting and commenting on life and social change 9. Learn skills of performing live on stage.
