Unit Code: LIT702

Unit Name: Word and Image: Literature and Film

Description: The course will examine the power of words and images, and explore the complex relationship between film and literature, recognizing that one is a traditional discipline and the other a relatively new field of study; that, in literature, words carry the experience whereas the driving force behind films is images. Each medium has its own intrinsic power. Some of the most outstanding films have used the written words of literature to re-create the experience in another medium. Students will be offered the opportunity to read literary texts and watch films based on those literary works. In this way, they will gain insights into the history, theory and aesthetics of both mediums. At the end of the course, students should become perceptive readers of books and intelligent viewers of films.
