Unit Name: Discovering Literature

Description: In this course students will discover, in terms of the aims stated above, techniques to deconstruct Eurocentric binaries through the scholarship of such theorists as Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Kwame Nkrumah, C.L.R. James, Frantz Fanon, George Padmore, Amilcar Cabral, Samir Amin, Aijaz Ahmad, Ranajit Guha, Stuart Hall, Chinua Achebe, Benedict Anderson, Ngugi Lo Liyong, Paul Gilroy, Michael H.A. Negri, Wilson Harris, and Edward Brathwaite. In addition, students will critique novels such as Jamaica Kincaid?s A Small Place, Albert Wendt?s Pouliuli, and Witi Ihimaera?s The Whale Rider, locate feminist issues and theories in The Whale Rider, and discern the difference between the novel and the film.
