Unit Name: Records and Archives Management

Description: This course explores the philosophy of records management and presents the basic techniques and standards for managing records in organisations. The emphasis is on activities and methods relevant to storage, filing, retention, preservation, retrieval and disposition of physical and electronic records, with special reference to legal and ethical considerations.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course students should be able to: • Analyse why records are needed, the value of records, the life cycle of records; • Evaluate variety of approaches and skills for both physical and electronic records management; • Apply the knowledge to develop records management programs that meet organisational requirements; • Compare legal and ethical issues in records management.

Prerequisite: Any Level 6 LIS course or consent from the HOD.
