Unit Name: Digital Libraries and Open Access

Description: This course introduces the motivation for digital library development and evolution of digital library collections and services. Various issues of digital library development such as document types and formats, access strategies and interfaces, policies, collection management and system evaluation are examined.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course students should be able to: • Evaluate the history and current state of digital library programs and activities; • Formulate best practices for digitization, data visualization, user interfaces and search facilities in digital libraries; • Formulate a plan a small-scale digital library; • Diagnose the role of librarians and information professionals in the planning, creation and managing digital libraries; • Evaluate open access publications, tools and services; • Evaluate the significance of open access publishing modes in scholarly publication.

Prerequisite: Any Level 5 LIS course or consent from the HOD.
