Unit Name: Bibliographic Control II

Description: This course aims to integrate the knowledge and skills of the Bibliographic Control I further. Students will acquire skills in content analysis and learn how to analyse different types of modes. They are familiar with methods, forms, and techniques of subject cataloguing and apply these techniques in the solution of concrete problems. Students are introduced to classification systems, thesauri, subject indexing schemes and they are enabled to analyse and evaluate documentary languages with regard to their suitability for information retrieval processes.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Assign subject headings using Library of Congress Subject Headings. • Formulate the scope of indexing and abstracting and the role of indexing and abstracting in the process of information retrieval. • Identify and evaluate different types of indexes and abstracts. • Index information by using a thesaurus.
